The Weyburn Salvation Army is once again preparing to roll out its popular summer lunch program, offering nutritious mid-day meals for children throughout the summer months. This year, the program will operate out of a new location – the Salvation Army building at 126 4th Street NE, instead of St. Michael School, where it was held last year.

"All kids are welcome to come down between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. and get a lunch straight from the building here," said Nicole Strickland, Community Ministries Worker with the Salvation Army.

The venue change comes as a result of improvements made to the facility.

"We were able to get some more sinks added to our staff room, which means we are able to do it here," Strickland explained. "So it will make it a lot easier."

The lunches will follow the familiar format from previous years, with each meal including a sandwich, fruit, a vegetable, a snack, and a juice box.

As with past years, volunteers and sponsors are a key part of making the program a success. Strickland noted they are looking for one to two volunteers each morning to help for about an hour. While some dates are already filled, there is still a need for additional support.

Sponsorships are also being accepted to help cover the cost of the meals. "We have a good start on our sponsorship, but we are still looking for sponsors for the lunch program; $500 a day, it does 100 lunches," said Strickland.

Those interested in volunteering or sponsoring a day can contact the Weyburn Salvation Army directly at (306) 842-2280 for more information.
