A recent effort by local RCMP to crack down on shoplifting in downtown Portage la Prairie led to 16 arrests over two separate days of targeted enforcement.
The first sweep took place on May 17th. It involved officers from the Portage RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) and General Duty team, with an extra set of eyes in the sky from the Manitoba RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS). Seven people were arrested for shoplifting during the operation, and two of those individuals were also wanted on outstanding warrants.
A second enforcement day followed last Saturday (May 24th), this time with assistance from the Manitoba Integrated Law Enforcement Team (MILET). Nine more people were arrested and charged with Theft Under $5,000.

In one incident, a 28-year-old man was spotted leaving a store without paying for an item and attempted to drive off. Police pulled him over, arrested him for shoplifting, and discovered he was also driving while suspended. His vehicle was impounded.
RCMP officials say the coordinated effort wouldn't have been possible without the support of local businesses, who provided information and cooperation throughout the investigation.
“Retail theft is negatively affecting many businesses across Manitoba,” said Sergeant Ian Henry of the Portage RCMP GIS. “Not only do store owners incur losses, but it’s also a significant safety concern for employees and the public.”
Police say they plan to continue enforcement operations in response to community concerns and rising incidences of retail theft.
