Last night, the Estevan Comprehensive School was host to their awards night, celebrating the academic and community achievements of a number of students. The awards ranged from scholarships from companies that hoped to see students join their industries, scholarships in memory of community members, and scholarships for academic achievement over the year.
ECS Principal James Jones says he's happy to award the students who help to make the ECS and Estevan as a whole a better place.
"I said at the beginning of this evening that I would circle tonight and our athletic awards night on our calendar as two of the pinnacle moments in an academic calendar, where we get to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. We have 740 students who grace our door every day, and we know that our students not only do amazing things here in our building, but also in the greater community. It's always great to shine the spotlight on those students who are very deserving."
The night included a change to their academic excellence awards, with Jones saying those give the opportunity for students to show off their work over the year.
"This year we had a change or revision or a new award with that Academic Excellence Award, which looks at students in the top 10 per cent academically, with their best average of eight to ten classes, depending on the grade. It's pretty amazing to see the academic commitment of those students who are striving to reach that top 10 per cent."
Jones says they'll be holding their athletics award night on June 4th at 6:30, giving another opportunity to recognize the effort that students have put in.
"Students are always working very hard here at ECS, both extracurricularly and academically, so always great to recognize those successes."
