Get ready for a Saturday filled with shiny chrome, revving engines, and sizzling burgers — all for a great cause. The Legends Car Club Car Show and Fundraising BBQ rolls into Hometown Ford in Winkler on Saturday, May 31st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and you're invited to bring your car, your appetite, and your generosity.

A longstanding tradition with heart

The annual car show has become a beloved local tradition, hosted by the Legends Car Club as a way to raise funds for the South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR), an organization that provides vital support to cancer patients across 10 municipalities in the region.

“We saw a need, and that’s why we got involved,” said Don Bergen, a longtime member of Legends Car Club. “I’ve been doing this car show for about 14 years now, and every dollar raised helps people right here in our community.”

Last year’s show raised an impressive $7,500 for SCCR — and the need has only grown since.

Classic cars, community spirit

The show is open to all makes and models. From muscle cars and hot rods to everyday favourites, if you love it, bring it. There’s no registration deadline — just show up, show off, and support the cause.

“It’s a come-and-go event,” Don explained. “The more the merrier. We’ve got a big parking lot, and we’ll always find room for one more car — and one more donor.”

Don will be showcasing his own pride and joy, a 2003 Corvette — a lifelong dream that started when he was just 10 years old. “My brother had a Corvette back then, and I knew I was going to own one someday. I finally got mine when I was 44.”

A BBQ for the whole community

Even if you don’t know a carburetor from a camshaft, the fundraising BBQ is reason enough to stop by. It’s open to everyone — no car required.

“The BBQ is for the public, not just for car lovers,” Don said. “Come for lunch, enjoy the atmosphere, and know you’re supporting a really important cause.”

Linda Reimer, board member with SCCR, echoed the importance of community participation.

“We’re 100% donation-funded,” she explained. “No government support. That means events like this are critical. We can’t thank Legends Car Club enough. Back in 2003, when we first opened, we had almost no money to help clients — it was their fundraiser that kept us running in those early years.”

Why It matters: supporting cancer patients close to home

The funds raised help provide transportation, wigs, head coverings, accommodation support, lymphedema sleeves, and much more for cancer patients in southern Manitoba.

“Just last year, we spent $175,000 on transportation alone,” Linda shared. “And that’s just one part of the services we offer.”

She emphasized that the awareness raised at events like the car show is just as important as the funds. “Everyone has been touched by cancer. And not everyone knows what resources are out there until they need them. Events like this remind people that support is available — and that it comes from their own community.”

Bring your car, bring your wallet, bring a friend

Whether you're a car enthusiast or just looking for a fun way to give back this weekend, this event checks all the boxes.

“Bring your checkbook and bring your car,” Don said with a smile. “We’ll have signs all along the highways — you won’t miss it.”

As Linda put it, “We don’t want anyone to ever need our services — but when they do, we want to make sure we’re here. And that only happens when the community steps up. This Saturday is a chance to do just that.”
