Phase 2 of Manitoba Hydro’s planned upgrade work in Portage la Prairie is now underway, several days ahead of schedule.

Brandon Avenue officially closed Thursday, May 29, instead of the previously estimated June 2 start date.

Brandon Avenue closed between Massey and Nana

The closure affects the stretch between Massey Crescent and Nana Lane near Island Park, where underground utility work is now taking place. The project is part of a multi-phase plan aimed at improving electrical infrastructure and preparing the area for future growth.

To maintain access to park amenities and Nana Lane, International Drive has been converted to temporary two-way traffic.

The city reminds residents that street parking is not permitted along International Drive during this time to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.

Previous upgrades part of Phase 1

This marks the second stage of Hydro’s larger upgrade effort. Phase 1 involved preliminary utility and roadwork and was completed earlier this year. The goal of the full project is to enhance service reliability and support the city’s long-term development.

Drivers are advised to follow signage and traffic instructions in the area and allow extra time when accessing park amenities or driving through the detour. Updates will be provided as work progresses.
