The hot and dry conditions the region has been experiencing has put a damper on some outdoor activities.

The M.D. of Willow Creek moved to a Fire Restriction on Wednesday (May 28), which has caused all existing Fire Permits to be cancelled, and no new permits will be issued while this Fire Restriction is still in place.

According to Willow Creek, the Fire Restriction will remain in effect until the region has experienced significant moisture.

Currently, burn barrels, incinerators, backyard fire pits, and recreation campfires (including the ones in campgrounds in the M.D. of Willow Creek) that meet their Bylaw requirements are still allowed to be used, but the M.D. is asking people to use extreme caution while burning.

If someone has burned recently, it's advised to revisit the previous burn site to check for hotspots, and if there are, douse them with water and stir up the ashes.

The M.D. could move to a Fire Ban with little to no notice, so keep an eye on fire bans and restrictions before lighting a fire.

As of Thursday (May 29), the Calgary Forest Area moved to a Fire Advisory.

Existing permits are still valid, but may not be extended.

New permits will still be issued on a case-by-case basis for essential burning, but fireworks and exploding targets are currently prohibited.

Parts of Vulcan County have also been placed under a Fire Ban as of today (Thursday, May 29), banning all open fires in the County, excluding those that are contained in a cooking or heating appliance that is fueled by fluids or gases.

While in the Calgary Forest Area, it's advised to use extra care and attention while having a campfire and never leave it unattended.

This fire advisory will remain in effect until the conditions improve or until further escalation is warranted.
