Portage la Prairie firefighters were kept extremely busy Thursday, responding to a series of emergency calls throughout the day, including multiple fires and a highway crash, all within just a few hours.

Morning basement fire in RM of Portage

The first call came in around 10:15 a.m. for a basement fire in the Rural Municipality of Portage. Crews responded quickly, managing to bring the fire under control before it could spread further. The situation was contained without injury or significant escalation.

Highway 1 collision adds to the workload

By mid-afternoon, around 3:00 p.m., fire crews were dispatched again, this time to a two-vehicle collision just east of the city on Highway 1. Emergency responders worked to manage the scene and ensure the safety of those involved.

Mobile homes destroyed in northwest fire

While still responding to the highway crash, firefighters were alerted to another call. What was initially reported as a pallet fire turned out to be far more serious. Upon arrival in the northwest area of Portage la Prairie, two mobile homes were found fully engulfed in flames. Crews remained on scene into the evening, working to extinguish the fire and prevent further damage.

Just as firefighters were returning from the mobile home fire, they were sent out once more, this time for a grass fire. That blaze was also brought under control without incident.

In total, crews responded to four separate emergencies in the span of just a few hours.

Despite the intensity of the day’s events, no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
