Cobbe’s Plumbing & Heating has been a trusted name in Portage la Prairie for 70 years — and according to General Manager Andy Taylor, their secret isn’t so secret: it’s all about people, service, and staying rooted in the community.
“We’ve still got the same owners, and they’re still involved. Our staff are the heart of the company,” says Taylor. “Providing good service and getting that repeat business — that’s what’s kept us going. We’re part of the community, part of what goes on here. We support everything from community events to kids’ sports.”
That commitment has helped Cobbe’s grow while staying true to its local roots. With a staff of 45, many of whom have been with the company for decades — Cobbe’s has built a reputation that spans generations.
“I’ve been here 39 years, and there are people who’ve been here longer than that,” Taylor notes. “Some employees left for a decade and then came back for another 10 years. That says a lot. It’s a good place to work, and I think that stability means our customers know who we are and trust us.”
Part of that trust comes from Cobbe’s consistent involvement in the community. The company proudly supports the Portage Terriers and has contributed over $100,000 toward the new arena at Stride Place by matching employee donations.
“When a call comes in, a lot of our servicemen are asked for by name,” Taylor adds. “You get to know your clientele, and that kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight.”
With summer just around the corner, Cobbe’s is encouraging residents to prepare their air conditioning systems before the heat hits.
“You can do a basic check by making sure the area around your outdoor unit is clear of leaves and debris, and inside, make sure your filter is clean,” Taylor explains. “But we also offer professional cleaning services, and we’re happy to come out and do it for you.”
Taylor emphasizes that regular maintenance is key to both comfort and efficiency. “Today’s furnaces and air conditioners are like high-efficiency vehicles. If they’re not tuned up, they won’t run properly — and that means higher bills and less comfort.”
Cobbe’s offers 24-hour emergency HVAC and plumbing service, with eight dedicated staff for air conditioning and a commitment to same-day or next-day service when possible.
Looking ahead to their eighth decade, Taylor says the company’s focus remains on readiness and education.
“It’s about keeping up with the times. Training our staff and staying ready for whatever comes next — that’s how we’ll keep serving Portage.”
