As wildfires continue to burn out of control in northern Manitoba, animals are being left behind or brought to safety and displaced with nothing.
To help comfort families and their furry friends, the City of Winnipeg Animal Services has opened up their facilities as a drop-off spot for animal food donations.
"Every donation matters. We’ll personally make sure the supplies you bring get into the hands of the rescue teams and organizations that need them most," said the City of Winnipeg Animal Services agency. "Thank you for reaching out and helping our community’s animals when they need it most."
Donations can be dropped off at 1057 Logan Avenue, Monday to Sunday between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The Animal Food Bank in Winnipeg has also stepped up, and with help from a lean but passionate volunteer team, will collect and deliver emergency pet-support services for families displaced by the wildfires.
They are looking for a wide variety of items, including:
- Pet food, wet and dry, for all types of pets
- Leashes, collars, harnesses
- Crates
- Blankets
- Litter
- Litter boxes (disposable ones are great)
- Water/food dishes (the collapsible kinds are great if they have, but any will do)
- Toys & chews
- Treats
Donations can be dropped off or called in at three locations, including Pet Valu Transcona, 1750 Plessis Rd. (204) 777-7387, Pet Valu 180 St.Anne’s Rd. (204) 504-9111 and LR Horse & Pet G-11 Main St N, Kleefeld, MB (431-205-7387).
Grateful Friends Animal Rescue is also stepping up alongside Save a Dog Network and K9 Advocacy to load up three paallets of dog food headed north.
To arrange a donation drop-off, email GFAR.ssupplies@gmail.com.
The wildfires have also left families wondering what to do with their family pet, so K9 Advocacy Manitoba has stepped up and put out a call for fosters.
"We’re urgently looking for cat and dog fosters to open their hearts and homes," said K9 Advocacy Manitoba. "These animals have nowhere else to go. With your help, we can give them safety, warmth, and a second chance."
K9 Advocacy will provide the supplies to anyone interested in helping out.
