The Regina Chaos came to Weyburn Thursday night looking for their first win of the season. They would score three early goals to take the lead, and that would be the difference as they held on to beat the Completely Branded RentPro Razorbacks 7-5 at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena.
With the loss, the Razorbacks are now 1-5 on the season, as are the Chaos, with both teams looking to move up the standings into 4th place and a playoff spot.
Regina wasted no time establishing control, with Avery Sewell scoring just 23 seconds into the game. Bennett Singer-Scherle and Austin Enright added first-period goals to give the Chaos a 3–1 edge after twenty minutes. Wyatt Mickler responded for the Razorbacks midway through the frame, assisted by Jessica Benning and Samuel Borschowa.
The Chaos stretched their lead in the second with goals from Ethan Williams, Colter Goodwill Jr., and a power-play marker from Enright. Weyburn fought back late in the period with a pair of quick goals, Borschowa with his second point of the night, followed by Nash Hignett with 29 seconds on the clock, but still trailed 6–3 heading into the final frame.
The Razorbacks continued to press in the third. Ryder Hignett’s goal at 1:14 into the period narrowed the gap, but Regina’s Caleb Singer-Scherle scored on the power play to restore a two-goal cushion. Hignett added a late power play tally for Weyburn, but the comeback fell short.
“We’ve got a good squad in front of us,” said Razorbacks coach Kenan Cummings postgame. “But until we compete for a full 60 minutes, we just can’t win these games.”
While Weyburn improved on discipline, taking fewer penalties than in previous home games, their coach emphasized there’s still room to grow.
“Our shorthanded has been spectacular this year,” Cummings acknowledged, “but we still took more penalties than needed, too many men, slashing. Those are things we need to tighten up.”
The loss leaves Weyburn still seeking their first home win of the season. With key games ahead, Cummings said the focus is clear.
“At the end of the day, playoffs are still the goal. We believe in these guys. They need to believe in themselves, but we need to get these W’s now.”
The Razorbacks will also have a short turnaround, as they head to Swift Current to face the Wolverines on Sunday. The two teams will then meet back at Tom Zandee Sports Arena on June 7th.
