The CobraCats girls rugby team is heading to the 15s zone final on Monday after a dramatic win over the Holy Trinity Knights in a game that came down to the final play.

Trailing late in the second half, the CobraCats battled back downfield. On the last play of the game, Livi Poulin scored the game-winning try, and Sophia Marrello added the conversion to give Cochrane a 26–20 victory.

Assistant coach Brian Morgotch said the team had defeated the Knights during the regular season, but this game was a much different test.

“They came out so much stronger today, they came out so much harder,” he said.

In the end, the CobraCats' depth made the difference, and Morgotch sees a bright future for the program.

“We have a very fast-paced team with a lot of veteran players who play at a really high level. We also have a lot of young players who’ve been phenomenal and are ready to step into the game when they're eligible to play next season.”

Game MVP Taia Graham said the team is heading to zones with one goal in mind — winning the banner.

“I feel like we’re growing a lot, which is good. We’ve never played like this before, and to have that in my senior year is pretty special. To be named MVP in my last home game means a lot.

“If we go into it with a team mindset, that’s what’s going to win us the game.”

In the other semifinal, the Foothills Composite Falcons defeated Bert Church to advance.

Earlier this month, both the senior and junior CobraCats teams captured the RVS divisional titles in Airdrie — the third banner for the junior girls and the first for the senior squad.

The boys’ season came to an end with a 31–7 loss to Foothills Composite.
