The Edmonton Oilers are set to make their second consecutive appearance in the Stanley Cup Final — but will their flag be raised once again at Cochrane Crossing Civic Plaza?

Coun. Morgan Nagel hopes so. He’s planning to reach out to his fellow town councillors today to see if they’ll support the idea.

Last night, the Oilers clinched the NHL’s Western Conference Final with a 6–3 win over the Dallas Stars. They open their rematch against the Florida Panthers at home on June 4.

RELATED STORY

Last year, Nagel successfully lobbied to have the Oilers flag raised in the heart of Cochrane. A devoted Calgary Flames fan, he said it was about more than rivalry — it was about supporting a Canadian team on hockey’s biggest stage.

No Canadian-based team has hoisted the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens did it way back in 1993 — 32 years ago.

Some councillors and local hockey fans joined him last year. Nagel showed up in his Flames jersey — his team of passion — but held a homemade sign that read: “Go Oilers! Canada is with you.”

Stay tuned to see if he can rally the support again.
