The Estevan Viragos are back in action this weekend as they host the Yorkton Lady Gridders for their first exhibition game of the spring season.
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Chow Field, just south of Estevan.
The game will serve as an important opportunity for the team’s many new players to get a feel for live football after weeks of practice and development. Head coach Matthew McGillivray said it’s all about giving the girls real-game experience in a lower-pressure setting.
“We’ve got a lot of new players, so it’ll be nice to see them out on the field,” he said. “It’s very hard to simulate what a natural football game is like in a practice setting.”
Many of the team’s recent additions came through school-based camps at Spruce Ridge and during regular practices at Chow Field. Saturday will also mark the coach’s first game at the helm of the Viragos.
“I’m looking forward to getting everyone out there, getting the jitters out for my first game as head coach, and just having some fun,” he said.
The Yorkton Lady Gridders aren’t currently part of the regular season league, but there are discussions about future expansion. For now, the exhibition match offers both squads a chance to test their progress in a competitive but friendly environment.
Fans are welcome to come watch and support the team.
