For years, Weyburnites and those from surrounding communities have come together to show their support for The Family Place, and possibly win some cold, hard cash along the way, with 50/50 for Kids, presented by Don’s Plumbing and Heating. Now we are calling on that spirit one last time.

“50/50 for Kids is coming up,” said Executive Director of The Family Place, Dawn Gutzke. “We’re going to be doing that throughout the month of June in partnership with our local radio station. We’ve been so blessed to have them hosting this amazing fundraiser for us for many, many years, and we’re excited to kick it off on Monday, June 2nd.”

The teams from AM1190, Magic 103, Country 106.7, DiscoverWeyburn, and The Family Place will be joining forces from June 2nd through June 20th to sell tickets at different locations around town. Tickets are $20 each, or you can get 6 for $100, and on June 23rd, half of the proceeds will go directly to The Family Place.

“The 50/50 for Kids money has truly helped us grow to where we are today,” said Gutzke. “We’re at a brand new facility at 744 McLelland Street. It’s been our dream to be able to get into a newer center with a green space, and 50/50 for Kids has really helped us grow to be able to get to where we are today. It’s been a huge factor of really who we are and helped us put some savings away. It also bought us new play equipment for our playrooms, helped us with some programming costs. It really has filled the gap for us for many years and helped us grow.”

Over the years, many ticket buyers have commented on The Family Place and how they have helped their family, along with so many families in Weyburn and area.

“We exist to serve families with children in their early years,” Gutzke noted. “If you are a family that has children from zero to age six, there’s something for everyone here at The Family Place. You can drop in, hang out, we have giant playrooms, and we have an outdoor green space. It’s a safe, inviting atmosphere where you can come and hang out and play with your kids and just have the best time ever. Then, on top of that, we do programming. You can drop into a program that we’re hosting or facilitating, like a cooking class with your children or a crafting class, or story time. Then we also run three preschools for children ages three and four, and there’s still room for people to apply for those if they’re still looking for preschool in the coming fall.”

She also added that they have a clothing room where families can get clothes for their children at no cost, access to resources from around the province, or anyone can just stop in, grab a coffee, and chat for a bit.

“And everything we do is also free, so there’s no barriers for families to participate, everyone is welcome.”

Because they do so much for free, they often rely on community support to keep everything running.

“Although we do have some extra grant funding now coming our way, it just doesn’t fill all the gaps we have,” she said. “The overhead costs, we’ve upped our programming, we’ve grown. We serve hundreds of families each and every day. So, we really rely on community fundraising and support to help us fill our budget needs.”

50/50 for Kids is a way to help fill those gaps, while also possibly helping your wallet! Half of the proceeds will go to The Family Place, with the other half going to one lucky ticket holder.
