The Regional Park Pass Lending Program will return to the Estevan Public Library from June 16 to September 15. This summer, 20 passes will be available locally, offering free access to nearly 100 regional parks across Saskatchewan.
“You can have it for a week,” said Jason Redshaw, manager of the Estevan Public Library. “But the bulk of them, people will pick up in the morning and normally return later on in the day just to get down to Woodlawn Park.”
Passes can be borrowed with a valid library card for a seven-day loan period, with no fees as long as they’re returned on time. “You will be charged the amount” if a pass is not returned, Redshaw added. Each pass retails for $60.
The pass grants unlimited access for one vehicle and its occupants to participating regional parks throughout the seven-day loan period. However, it does not cover camping, accommodations, activity fees (such as swimming or golfing), reservation charges, guided tours, special event fees, firewood, equipment rentals, souvenirs, or mooring.
The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no renewals or holds.
Now in its third year in Estevan, the number of passes has steadily increased — from 10 in the first year to 15 last year. “This year’s increase reflects the community’s enthusiasm and demand,” Redshaw said.
Province-wide, 864 passes are being distributed through regional libraries, including branches in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, and university libraries. The program began as a pilot project between Saskatchewan public libraries, regional park systems, and the provincial government. After three successful years, it was renewed and expanded.
While the Estevan branch does not carry printed park maps, Redshaw noted that “we do have the website with all the regional park maps” available online.
