After a smoky weekend, the southeast is being greeted by showers to start off this week, beginning with a system today. Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins takes a look at the system bringing a bit more moisture.

"It's going to track up into northern Saskatchewan Sunday, but possibly bringing some showers and maybe a thunderstorm again for the southeast corner of Saskatchewan on Monday. So could see another round of thunderstorms. It doesn't look like a really huge risk. So, a non-severe thunderstorm could pop up in the area on Sunday evening into Monday."

Forecasting for this system is tricky, says Desjardins, as there's a lot of instability in the air with some of the summer weather.

"The one thing is, though, with the lack of moisture and the heat, sometimes that suppresses things as it's actually too warm in the upper atmosphere to get things going. But there is still a chance there because of that potential instability."

If those thunderstorms do end up developing, Desjardins predicts they'll be somewhat localized as tighter pockets of rain.

Monday is also looking to be chillier, which could cause problems concerning more smoke rolling into the region.

"For Monday, it's another cold front coming in. So, northwesterly winds could bring some more smoke into the southeastern portion of the province for Monday. But of course, this is dependent on the wildfire status at the time."

Desjardins says they're currently not seeing any moisture-related reprieve from the wildfires, so smoke is expected to continue.

She advises people to stay up to date on any weather alerts, including air quality statements, by checking in with Environment Canada.
