Dozens of people came together for Union Gospel Mission's North End community barbecue at the UGM Family Life Centre on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the warm barbecue lunch, there were various sports and games for families to participate in, with a bouncy castle especially for younger children.
Volunteers from different church groups came along to support the UGM staff in executing the barbecue. A youth group from Austin Evangelical Fellowship and a young adults' group from, Faith Life Community Ministries were present as support. Gimli Bible Camp and Circle Square Ranch had tables set up as well to discuss summer camp opportunities with families.
Staff and volunteers alike had inspiring stories about the work that UGM does in Winnipeg. Freda, a UGM volunteer, said, "I love and respect Union Gospel Mission. The work that they do in these various parts of Winnipeg it's been a blessing to me all these years." She continued, "I will continue to do so [serve], as long as the Lord enables me to do so. To serve Him in this way by serving others."
UGM has seven ministries across four locations. They aim to proclaim the gospel to people experiencing hardship and are underprivileged." We want to share the gospel with people who are marginalized and living in poverty and addiction," said Munya, the volunteer coordinator.
The Family Life Centre serves the community in several ways. "Our Family Life Ministry is right in the heart of the North End, and they serve families and children with after-school programs and women's programs during the week," Munya continued.
Attendees also talked about the impact of UGM in the North End community and how it brings the community together. "I didn't know it, but I met one of our North-end neighbours here," revealed Linda, an attendee of the barbecue.
Saturday's barbecue was not only about food and games but about being the light in our community and sharing the love of Jesus.
