The Completely Branded RentPro Weyburn Razorbacks were looking to carry the momentum of a close loss Thursday into Sunday’s game in Swift Current against the Wolverines. The Razorbacks would carry the lead into the third period, but Swift Current would rally late, scoring three goals in the third period to win 6-5.
Swift Current would be the first to get on the board when Grady Henderson scored 3:25 into the game. It wouldn’t take long for Weyburn to respond, though, as Ryder Hignett scored his 13th of the season just 71 seconds later, with Jack Missal chipping in the assist.
Swift Current regained the lead, though, when Daylan Elviss scored a shorthanded goal with 5:15 remaining in the frame, giving the home side a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room.
In the second period, Weyburn came out firing. Junter Willoughby notched his first of the season 5:45 into the frame, with an unassisted, shorthanded tally. Then Jessica Benning added her first of the season, and first as a Razorback, with 9:02 remaining. Hignett had the assist on the goal.
Missal would add to the Weyburn lead less than a minute later, when he buried a feed from Sam Borschowa to make it a 4-2 lead with 8:10 remaining.
Late in the second, Swift Current would respond, as Henderson scored his second of the game on the power play with 65 seconds left on the clock.
In the third period, Swift Current rallied, with Henderson scoring again to even the game at 4-4 2:12 in. Then, Hudson Haydon scored 7:49 into the third to make it a 5-4 game. Henderson rounded out the scoring for the Wolverines with 4:22 remaining to put Swift Current up 6-4.
Weyburn applied the pressure in the final moments to try to even the game up, with Hignett scoring his second of the day, assisted by Missal, to make it 6-5. However, they were unable to score the equalizer and came away with a 6-5 loss.
The Razorbacks are 1-5 on the season, tied with Regina for 5th place in the PGLL, two points back of Swift Current for the final playoff spot with a game in hand. Weyburn will have a chance to close the gap as the two teams meet again this coming Saturday at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
