A remarkable wave of generosity and grassroots fundraising has swept across Cochrane as the community rallies around young Brielle Thomson, a local girl in need of robotic legs.

“It’s quite overwhelming, actually—far beyond my expectations,” said organizer Dan Kroffat in an update. “The momentum behind this is remarkable. The community should stand up and take a bow.”

He's asking people to continue finding creative ways to raise funds, then bring them to the free barbecue at Cochrane Toyota on June 14.

“My hopes are that on June 14, we have a barometer there, and we’re able to go right over the top to assure her mom that she can go ahead and order the robotic legs.”

Brielle lives with cerebral palsy and uses a bright pink wheelchair. A cutting-edge device by Trexo Robotics could give her the ability to walk, but it comes with a $43,000 price tag.

Kroffat praised those who have already held events. There's been many, including a barbecue at Save-On-Foods, charity basketball tournament organized by the Fil-Can Hoops and Beyond Society and an upcoming billiards tournament at the Venue Bar and Grill on June 8.

Since mid-April, Original Joe’s has also been collecting and accepting bottle donations.

The June 14 finale is shaping up to be a true community celebration. Highlights include a free barbecue courtesy of Cochrane Toyota, complimentary muffins and coffee provided by McDonald’s, and a major door prize: a $500 gift card from a local grocer donated by MLA Peter Guthrie, who will be handing out the free raffle tickets in person.

There will also be an opportunity to bid on a selection of incredible silent auction items donated for the event.

Brielle and her mother, Michelle, will be in attendance.

“It’s going to be quick, upbeat and heartfelt. Everything will happen in less than two hours,” said Kroffat.
