A wildfire growing near Lynn Lake has reached the edge of town.

In a post on Facebook on Monday, the town announced that the fire had reached behind the airport and was advancing rapidly due to extreme wind conditions.

"It crossed into the area around the hospital and destroyed several abandoned buildings nearby," said the town.

Thanks to quick and coordinated efforts, emergency crews were able to protect the hospital and surrounding properties, and crews remained at the site throughout the night.

The town says they experienced strong wind gusts of over 60 km/h on Monday, but light rain helped to slow the first movement near the community.

"I've never felt so homeless in my life... And this is just the beginning," said one resident of Lynn Lake. "I'm pretty strong mentally, but this just breaks me... For my kid's sake... Pray to God, we all have homes in the morning. Lynn Lake needs prayers."

A mandatory evacuation was issued in Lynn Lake last Tuesday, with residents and visitors being evacuated to the Thompson Regional Community Centre.

"A wide range of resources from both within Lynn Lake and across Manitoba are working together under challenging conditions to keep the Town safe," said the town. "The fire remains active and unpredictable, which is why the mandatory evacuation order remains in effect at this time."

Firefighters from Brandon and Morris have been helping local firefighters in the battle to keep the wildfire at bay.

"We know how much everyone wants to return home, and we will not keep you away a moment longer than necessary," said the town. "Our community is strong, and we are doing everything possible to ensure a safe return home as soon as conditions allow."
