Estevan saw a soggy and warm May as Environment and Climate Change Canada was tracking some of the conditions we saw over the month. Scientist Christy Climenhaga gives a rundown on the temperatures and the averages for the community.
"It was generally a warmer May for much of Saskatchewan. In the Estevan area, you came out about a degree and a half above normal in terms of our mean temperatures. So, although that doesn't really put you in the top 10 ranking, it does put you on that warmer side than normal. You ranked 27th, which I know is not a headline-grabbing warm temperature, but generally warm conditions."
Climenhaga says that by comparison, central and northern Saskatchewan saw higher relative temperatures, being around three and a half degrees above normal.
For rainfall, Estevan was also distinct from much of the rest of the province thanks to a big mid-May storm.
"Estevan was actually kind of different from the rest of the province. It was a very dry May for much of Saskatchewan, but in that southeastern corner right around the Estevan area, you did get a little more precipitation, which bumped up your numbers. Taking a look at our statistics for May in Estevan, it was actually your 13th wettest May on record."
With 97.5 millimetres reported for the month and a monthly average of 65.7, it was quite a change for the Estevan area compared to other places around the province.
"Just to put things in perspective on how dry some of the other areas in the province were," said Climenhaga, "La Ronge saw its second driest May on record, and Prince Albert's third driest. So it was quite a different story heading towards that southeastern corner of Saskatchewan."
Estevan's fortunes were almost entirely changed thanks to a mid-May system which dropped what was a month's worth of rain in around 48 hours.
That also shifted the stats across the entirety of spring, says Climenhaga.
"Estevan didn't really have any, again, headline-grabbing numbers, but when we're looking at the spring as a whole, Estevan did come out wetter than normal for the spring, thanks to, in part, your wet May. You had 144.4 millimetres of precipitation, which your average is 111.9, so that puts you at the 24th wettest spring on record."
In terms of temperature, Estevan was also 1.3 degrees warmer than normal, putting the 2025 spring season as the 23rd warmest spring on record.
