A recent meeting by the South East Cornerstone Public School Division looked at some of their totals from the Terry Fox fundraising runs, walks, and events last year to see just how much was raised.
In total, 28 school facilities held events, with the Terry Fox Foundation saying that 2024 was a banner year for fundraising in the pursuit of cancer cures.
Deanna Holowachuk, who manages the school runs for the foundation, said schools across the country raised close to $14 million for cancer research.
“Cornerstone showed great strength in numbers and leadership by raising $52,079.61,” she noted in a letter to Cornerstone chairwoman Audrey Trombley, which was shared with SECPSD board members during their May 28th meeting.
2024 was also the first year that the fundraising efforts surpassed 10,000 registered schools across the country, according to Holowachuk.
2025's runs are scheduled for September 25 (barring weather or other mitigating factors), marking the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox's original Marathon of Hope.
Holowachuk praised three schools from the SECPSD in her letter as they achieved Top Fundraising status in Saskatchewan in 2024. The schools were the Carnduff Education Complex, raising $10,826.80, Carlyle Elementary School, which brought in $6,165.75, and Arcola School, with a total of $5,350.
