The 63rd annual Grey Owl men’s golf tournament is set to tee off Friday morning at Clear Lake Golf Course, Wasagaming.
The Grey Owl, presented by IG Private Wealth Management, is one of the province’s longest running tournaments and continues to be a popular event. More than 260 golfers have registered to play 36 holes over the three-day event.
Two-time defending champion Jay Thiesen of Russell will be looking for his third straight tournament victory, a feat last accomplished by Breezy Bend’s Garth Collings in 2007. Collings has won a record 11 Grey Owl titles and will be vying to make it an even dozen this weekend.
Thiesen and Collings will have plenty of competition this weekend on the hills above Clear Lake, as there are five other past champions in the field. Two-time winners Jared Jacobson of Brandon (2022, 2014) and Nick Myhre of Rolette, N.D., (2018, 2017) are back, as are Edmonton’s Trent Wood (2002), Brandon’s Murray Lindenberg (1978) and Calgary’s Jack McDiarmid (1974).
In addition, 12 of the 18 players who made last year’s championship flight have returned to take a run at the Cactus Jack Wells Memorial Trophy, so the competition promises to be fierce.
The Grey Owl, however, is for golfers with all types of swings. There will be 11 flight winners as well as a Greyer Owl champion for the best shooter age 60 and over.
The annual Howl dinner and program will take place on Saturday night at Danceland in downtown Wasagaming, where the Grey Owl committee will name its annual Robert J. Picken Memorial Honour Award winner, conduct a 50/50 draw and give out several thousand dollars worth of draw prizes to lucky competitors.
The first tee time on Friday is at 7:10 a.m. The low 16 and ties after the first round will make up the championship flight, which will tee off on Sunday morning at approximately 10 a.m. To view tee times, click HERE!
