Midland MLA Lauren Stone recently raised concerns in the Manitoba Legislature about the need for a new gymnasium at Elm Creek School, citing overcrowding and safety issues.
She notes, “Physical education classes are overcrowded, and there is insufficient space for whole school assemblies and events.”
The current gym is aging and no longer meets the needs of the growing student population.
Safety concerns prompt urgent calls for replacement
Stone adds, “Parents have significant safety concerns of the physical space and the aging electrical systems. Uneven floors pose a safety risk for students participating in physical education classes or sports.”
She continues that the ventilation system was designed for a smaller number of students and now poses serious health risks.
Petition calls on government action
The petition urges the Manitoba government to “immediately work with the Prairie Rose School Division to begin the process of replacing the gymnasium facilities at the Elm Creek School in consultation with parents and the community.”
Stone remarks that the facility is the only option available to students, and if it becomes inoperable, “students at Elm Creek School would be deprived of physical education spaces.”
