As summer vacation approaches and more Albertans spend time away from home, RCMP are urging residents to take steps to protect their properties from yard theft and break-ins.

In 2024, Alberta RCMP responded to nearly 4,000 residential break and enters, with over 360 of those occurring in June alone. Officers say these types of crimes are often crimes of opportunity—and many can be prevented through basic safety measures.

One of the key approaches is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, or CPTED. The strategy includes simple but effective tips such as:

  • Installing motion-sensor lighting around your home

  • Maintaining clear sightlines by trimming overgrown trees and bushes

  • Locking gates, sheds, and garages

  • Covering and securing windows when you're away

  • Keeping valuable items like bikes and barbecues out of sight

  • Considering a security system, especially for seasonal homes
