A summer solstice is described as when one of the Earth’s poles (North Pole or South Pole) has its maximum tilt towards the Sun. This day contains the most amount of sunlight and signals the first day of Summer. This year’s Summer Solstice is on Friday June 20th, but an even bigger event shines bright the next day; the Yellow Grass Summer Solstice.

On Saturday June 21, the streets of Yellow Grass will be brimming with people and excitement as they soak up the first full day of Summer, with a variety of activities going on as well. Yellow Grass Parks and Recreation board member, Curtis Robertson, explains what will take place.

“Well, we're having a pancake breakfast in the morning from 8:00 till 10:00 a.m. and that's at the drop-in center and then we’re having a parade at 10:30. (Then) the Show and Shine, we’re going to have a car show from 11 to 4. There’s a lunch at the park at 12:00 put on by the library. Then, the cornhole tournament starts at 1:00 p.m. Supper in the park from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. which is pulled pork on a bun and a potluck so kind of bring something and eat whatever you want.”

That’s a lot of events in one day, from breakfast, lunch, and supper to a cornhole tournament and a show and shine. The fun doesn’t end either as Robertson says the band Switch will be performing into the night.

All proceeds from the Yellow Grass Summer Solstice will go towards the building of the new playground in Allen Park. Robertson explains an event of this size can’t take place without the support and help of volunteers.

“Well with our group, (parks and rec board) there's four of us and last year it was incredible how many people would come up and say, ‘Yeah, I'll help. What can I do?’ We had T-shirts, so then we just started throwing people T-shirts and they were just doing everything. So yeah, the help was awesome last year and we're hoping to get the same kind of help this year.”
