The fire ban previously in place for central and northern Alberta has now been extended to include the Calgary Forest Area due to heightened wildfire risk.

Under the ban, all outdoor wood fires are prohibited and existing fire permits have been suspended.

The ban applies to both public and private lands, including:

  • Campfires in designated campgrounds

  • Backcountry and random camping areas

  • Day-use areas

  • Residential properties

  • The use of barbecue charcoal briquettes

  • Fireworks and exploding targets

What’s still allowed:

  • Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances

  • Indoor wood-burning fireplaces

  • Open flame oil devices, such as lanterns

Although there are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, Alberta Wildfire officials say wildfire prevention staff are actively posting signage throughout the region.

On average, 63 per cent of wildfires in Alberta are human-caused.

Residents and visitors are urged to comply with the fire ban and to report any signs of smoke or flame in forested areas by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

A detailed map of affected areas is available at Alberta Fire Bans.
