Two first responders from Diamond Valley Fire Rescue were deployed to Swan Hills to help with wildfire mitigation efforts on May 29.
With the recent wildfire activity, it has become common for Diamond Valley Fire Rescue to deploy firefighters and fire apparatus to support provincial operations.
“This is a common practice for these two individuals. They went up to Jasper last year as well,” said Trevor Doublet, Deputy Fire Chief. “They are very familiar with how Alberta forestry works and are assisting with structural protection within Swan Hills.”
Before being deployed, members are required to complete Alberta forestry training.
By sending the members to support relief efforts, they gain familiarity with the equipment and how to use it in different climates and in different situations.
“As we are a Volunteer Fire Department, these deployments give them experience and expose them to situations that they don't traditionally see with structural firefighting,” Doublet said. “It opens up their knowledge set and their ability.”
While the members are away, emergency services have not been disrupted.
“Before we deploy or fulfill any requests, we ensure that we have sufficient resources in town to manage any emergencies that happen in Diamond Valley and the surrounding county that we are responsible for,” Doublet said.
As the Swan Hills fire is now being described as held, Doublet expects the two firefighters will return home shortly if they are not requested elsewhere in the province.
