Fifty more children in Winnipeg will have a bed to call their own thanks to the efforts of Manitoba Blue Cross and local non-profit Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP).

According to a press release, Manitoba Blue Cross employee volunteers gathered at Blue Cross Park for the second year in a row to build 50 beds for children who don't have one.

“It was incredible to see the passion and commitment that our employees brought to the park today, and for such an important cause,” Diane Sparrow DeGrave, vice president of people and corporate services for Manitoba Blue Cross, said in a press release.

“The value of a good night’s sleep cannot be overstated and it’s an honour for all of us at Manitoba Blue Cross to help ensure local children can get the rest they need and deserve.”

In addition to the bed-building event, the company has committed to funding a five-year building lease for SHP’s Winnipeg chapter. The organization says this support will allow them to more than double bed production for children in the community.

“On days like today, it’s more evident than ever that the Colour of Caring isn’t just a tagline – it’s woven into everything we do at Manitoba Blue Cross,” DeGrave added.

To further support the cause, a bedding drive is underway until June 20.

Members of the public are invited to donate new, twin-sized bedding items, including sheets, blankets, comforters, and pillows, at the Manitoba Blue Cross office at 599 Empress Street in Winnipeg, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
