Wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in areas of the Foothills.   

A Special Air Quality Statement was issued on June 7 at 4:30 p.m. by Environment Canada, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Alberta Health, and Alberta Health Services (AHS).  

The statement is in effect for the following areas: 

  • Foothills Co. near Blackie

  • Siksika Res.  

  • Vulcan Co. near Arrowwood Herronton and Queenstown   

  • Vulcan Co. near Vulcan and Ensign  

  • Vulcan Co. near Carmangay and Champion  

  • Vulcan Co. near Lomond Travers and Little Bow Reservoirs     

  • Vulcan Co. near Milo  

The statement was also extended to the following regions at 10:23 on Saturday evening.

Wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in some areas.

Conditions are expected to improve Sunday.

Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.

As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

During this time, individuals could experience symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough.   

Anyone aged 65 and older, young children, and those with an existing illness or chronic health condition are more likely to be impacted.   

Those at risk are encouraged to limit their time outdoors.
