Blaine Frederich and his 71 Chevelle SS at the Humboldt Vintage Club Show and Shine on Sunday.

The rain taps turned off on Sunday to allow the annual Humboldt Vintage Club Show and Shine to go ahead out at the Humboldt Vintage Club. The windy weather may have deterred a few participants, but once again, the compound behind the main building was filled with classic and modern roadsters and trucks, along with semis and a few other oddities on display.

Of course, those with the highest gloss were the revered muscle cars, stemming back to the early to mid ‘70’s, up to the technological marvels of today. The restored half ton and vintage trucks drew a lot of attention, as those carried lots of memories of service back in the day.

The long lean lines of the classic sedans and elder year sports cars were present and accounted for. Many of those autos had great stories of their recovery and restoration.

Take the 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle, lovingly restored by Blaine Frederick Pilger over a period of 7 years. That project was wrapped up 21 years ago, and the paint finish glistens like the day it was applied. Now, the restorer says he’s finally on to the next one to a 1970 edition, which will include some modifications.

“I’m going to put in a 454, and that’ll be around the 500-horsepower range,” Frederick says. “I’m going to put disc brakes on it which they didn’t have. I haven’t decided on a manual or an automatic with an overdrive yet.”

The suspension is under way, Frederich says, then the engine and transmission go back on with a bit of body work left to do.

More treasures awaited inside the main building with the silent auction, the 50/50 sales and the ever-present elephant years. Outside, the kids who braved the wind had a chance for rides on the mini steam train.

It’s one of the first regional show and shines of the season, and always a crowd pleaser no matter the weather with the Humboldt and Vintage Club volunteers.

Enjoy a gallery of some of this year’s entrants.
