What's the speed limit in school and playground zones in your community? Do you think it's reasonable?
I'm asking you that today as many of my friends and neighbours are bellyaching about reduced speed limits in Moose Jaw.
We just recently made the move from speed limits of 40 km/h down to 30 in school zones and now we're doing the same around our playgrounds.
I get it. It does feel like you're barely moving when you have to hit the brakes and reduce your speed from 50 to 30 but the stats show it makes for a much safer community.
Studies have found lower speeds reduce crash severity. For example, a pedestrian hit by a vehicle at 30 km/h has a 90% chance of survival but, at 50 km/h that drops to 20%.
It's pretty simple, really. At lower speeds, drivers have more time to react and stop safely without incident.
You know, there are a number of smaller Saskatchewan communities where the speed limit is 30 km/h - period.
My opinion might not be popular but I'm in favour of the reduced speed limits.
And you know, if you want to get your motor runnin', all you have to do is head out on the highway.
See what I did there?
