The Town of Nanton is staying at a Level 2 Water Conservation, even though things are improving.
They initially moved to Level 2 in early May, due to an increase in groundwater flowing into the Town's collection system.
Even though they were using temporary storage tanks, vacuum trucks, and a containment cell to relieve the system, the Wastewater Treatment Plant was not able to handle the additional water.
According to the Town of Nanton, while the wastewater infiltration is improving, and the reservoir supply is satisfactory, they are keeping the Level 2 Water Conservation in place.
They are keeping it at Level 2 because of the forecast of a long, hot summer, as well as to keep the Town's system healthy and resilient.
"While things are trending in the right direction, we’re heading into a season where water demand naturally increases -- gardens need watering, lawns start to grow, and we all enjoy spending more time outdoors," explained the Town in a Facebook post. "To stay proactive and ensure our systems stay healthy and resilient, we’ll be keeping Level 2 Water Conservation measures in place for now."
As part of Level 2 Water Conservation, Nanton residents are being asked to always use water wisely.
All outdoor uses of water should follow the lawn watering schedule at this time, and new permit applications for irrigation and construction may be denied.
The Town is also asking residents to report any changes in water pressure or a suddenly busy sump pump in a basement to the Town, as it helps the Town determine future excavation work.
Under the Level 2 Water Conservation, watering is required to happen on designated days, residents are asked to fix leaks promptly and avoid wasting water whenever possible.
As the Town of Nanton stated on their Facebook post about the water restriction, "These are small efforts that collectively make a huge difference."
By conserving water, the Town says they aren't just protecting their infrastructure, they are also safeguarding water for future generations, as well as setting themselves up for a sustainable summer.
As part of Level 2 Water Conservation, even house numbers can water on Wednesday and Saturday, while odd house numbers are able to water on Thursday and Sunday.
