A fun run is coming to Red Deer this Friday, but more than memories and medals will be shared.

The fifth annual Kaitlyn’s Ladybug Fun Run will take place at Bower Ponds from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and participants can run or walk a distance of one to five kilometres.

The event is held in memory of Kaitlyn Wiley, who passed away in 2020 at age 19 due to a pulmonary embolism.

“She has been called Bug all her life for a nickname,” said Myrna Lemay, Kaitlyn’s grandmother.

“For the race, when they started thinking about it, to me, a ladybug was just something that connected me with her.”

The event cost is $25 per person, and the first 50 people to register will receive a medal upon completing the run. Burgers and chips will be available after the run.

Lemay hopes the event will be a fun time for all participants and says it helps her reflect on something deeper.

“I think a connection that we're not all alone and we're all part of a community,” said Lemay.

All proceeds raised will go toward the Robb Nash Project, a charity that Kaitlyn was passionate about and volunteered with multiple times.
