The St. Laurent Fire Department is proudly unveiling a major addition to its emergency response fleet, a custom-built Wildland Type 5 Firefighting Apparatus, designed specifically to meet the growing need for wildland fire protection in the area.
This new vehicle represents more than just a tool in the department’s arsenal, it’s a homegrown success story.
The project began when the department, with help from the Municipal Council, secured a used hydro truck. From there, a small group of firefighters got to work converting it into a high-functioning wildland response unit.

Built by firefighters, for the community
“This apparatus isn't just an acquisition; it's a shining example of resourcefulness and the incredible dedication of our team,” notes a spokesperson for the department.
Rather than outsourcing the work or purchasing a costly new unit, the team repurposed used parts and equipment to rebuild the vehicle in-house. Through careful budgeting and coordination between Council and Department Management, the department was able to complete the project without cutting corners.
“What truly sets this project apart is the extraordinary effort by a core group of our firefighters,” says the spokesperson. “Through smart budgeting between Council and Department Management, skillful design, and the clever use of used parts and equipment, our firefighters personally converted and rebuilt this truck into a high-functioning wildland unit.”
The new unit steps in for the department’s former wildland truck, affectionately known as the “Red Dodge,” which logged more than 360,000 kilometres before recently running into motor trouble.
Ready for the wildfire season ahead
With wildland fire threats on the rise, the upgraded truck is expected to significantly boost response times and efficiency on brush and grass fire calls throughout the St. Laurent area.
“The capabilities of our new Wildland Type 5 truck will undoubtedly improve our efficiency and effectiveness in responding to brush fires and other wildland incidents, ensuring our continued ability to serve you safely and effectively,” continues the spokesperson.
The department credits its success to the combination of community support, careful planning, and hands-on effort from its own members.
“We extend our deepest appreciation to the Municipal Council for their foresight and support, and especially to the dedicated firefighters whose skills, commitment, and vision brought this project to fruition,” remarks the spokesperson. “Their hands-on efforts exemplify the spirit of the St. Laurent Fire Department.”
