A beautiful new integrated and masterfully designed home for six Humboldt residents has gone up at the corner of 3rd Street and 7th Avenue in Humboldt. The home houses residents with varying disabilities in a supportive environment. Dubbed Harmony House, the home is a partnership between Futuristic Industries and the Government of Saskatchewan who provided $1.6 million in capital funding and $360,000 in annual operational funding. Representatives from the government, the City of Humboldt, Futuristic Industries and the residents themselves participated in the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, June 9, on a beautiful summer afternoon just outside the residence.

On hand was Social Services Minister Terry Jenson who spoke on behalf of the government. “We’re gathered to recognize a significant step forward in our collective step forward in supporting adults with intellectual disabilities,” said Jensen as he welcomed the residents to their home. “As a government we’re trying to make Saskatchewan the best place in Canada for individuals with disabilities to live, work, and enjoy life to their fullest.”

Humboldt City Councillor Sarah McInnis talked about the importance of the new residence from the City’s perspective.

“Humboldt is a city rooted in inclusion, innovation and compassion, and few organizations embody these values more closely than Futuristic Industries,” McInnis said. “For over 50 years, they’ve led the way in creating spaces of empowerment, opportunity and belonging. This new group home is more than a building. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when we prioritize community because when everyone is supported and included, our whole community grows stronger.”

Resident Jimmy Matieschen stepped to the mic and delivered a heartfelt and impromptu greeting along with his prepared speech. He thanked Futuristic Director Ray Whitton, the staff and caregivers, and everyone for attending.

Jimmy Matieschen welcomes those in attendance.

“I live at Harmony House. I love living here, I love my room and the big living room and big TV and being with my friends. The staff looks after me really good and I love living here. Thank you for building the house that feels like home.”

Futuristic Board of Directors Chair Kevin Grieman added to the festivities.

“On behalf of the board and the individuals we serve, I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Ministry and Sask Housing for their unwavering support for the planning, building and ongoing cooperation with our new group home. This incredible partnership has truly transformed the lives of those we serve, creating a safe, supportive environment that promotes independence and well-being.”

Grieman said those efforts have gone well beyond providing for the immediate needs of the residents, but it’s created an environment where they can thrive and live with dignity.

Director Ray Whitton thanked all for attending and for the deep and ongoing support.

“Within our organization, we often talk about helping our folks live the best versions of their lives. We are not alone in this core value, and we are grateful for support from the Ministry, our Board of Directors, our staff and the community and City of Humboldt. Having this brand-new home specifically designed for individuals experiencing disability is incredibly important because it ensures that they have a safe, supportive and accessible place to thrive. A new home designed to meet their unique needs provides not only the physical environment that fosters independence, but also the comfort and stability needed for personal growth.

The spacious common living area includes a modern kitchen with the latest appliances, a living room with an entertainment area, individual rooms, and specialized bathrooms to support a wide range of needs. The contemporary design is modern, warm and inviting.

The afternoon wrapped up with the residents and their friends and guests joining in a heart-warming rendition of “You Are My Sunshine,” the perfect accompaniment to a special welcoming ceremony wrapped in a caring community.
