Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Airdrie and surrounding areas at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, warning that wildfire smoke is causing or is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.
The alert applies to Rocky View County near Airdrie and Crossfield. Environment Canada and Alberta Health officials say air quality and visibility can fluctuate over short distances and change significantly from hour to hour.
"As smoke levels increase, health risks increase," the statement noted. "Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events."
People at higher risk from outdoor air pollution include seniors, pregnant individuals, infants and young children, people with chronic conditions, and those who work outdoors. Health officials recommend staying indoors, using proper filtration or air purifiers when possible, and considering a well-fitted respirator mask if outdoor exposure is unavoidable.
The statement includes a full list of possible symptoms ranging from mild irritation and coughing to more serious respiratory distress. Anyone experiencing chest pain, wheezing, or severe symptoms is advised to seek immediate medical attention.
Earlier in the morning, no statement had been in effect. Environment Canada’s 7:00 a.m. Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reading for Airdrie was 3 (low risk). A forecast issued at 6:00 a.m. projected levels to rise to 4 (moderate risk) through Tuesday night and Wednesday.
According to the AQHI guidance, outdoor activity is generally considered safe at those levels. However, health authorities say conditions can shift rapidly during smoke events and recommend checking local updates frequently.
The Tuesday weather forecast, last updated just before 8:00 a.m., includes a high of 24 C and a very high UV index of 8. Tuesday night is expected to be clear with a low of 5 C.
