Residents in and around Cochrane are being warned about poor air quality and reduced visibility as wildfire smoke continues to drift into the area.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Rocky View County near Cochrane, advising that smoke is causing or expected to cause air quality to deteriorate. Conditions may fluctuate quickly and vary greatly from one area to another, even hour by hour.
Health officials are urging residents to limit time outdoors, especially vulnerable groups such as seniors, young children, pregnant people, and those with chronic health conditions.
“You may experience mild symptoms like irritated eyes, a sore throat, or a mild cough,” the advisory states. “But more serious symptoms like chest pain or severe coughing can occur and should be taken seriously. If you think you're having a medical emergency, seek immediate help.”
People who work or exercise outdoors are encouraged to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities and wear a properly fitted N95 respirator mask if they must be outside.
Those staying indoors should keep windows and doors closed and consider using air purifiers to reduce smoke particles in the air. If an extreme heat event occurs at the same time, residents are reminded to prioritize staying cool.
Residents are also encouraged to check in on neighbours, friends, and family who may be more susceptible to the effects of smoke.
