A roadside jab at Winkler's Steve “Bubba” Peters has turned into a catch of the day—nearly $2,000 raised to buy fishing gear for kids.

It all started when a now-infamous sign popped up: “Bubba Sucks at Fishing.” Then came two more. Instead of getting riled up, Peters leaned in.

“I said for every like and share on my Facebook page, I’d donate a dollar to get fishing gear for a local kid,” he said. “Two of my buddies said they’d match.”

Between that challenge, and donations from 4 Pines Construction, Canadian Tire, and Winkler Game and Fish, the total quickly grew. Now, every nominated child will get a fishing package. “The nominations are closed,” said Peters, “but we’re putting together kits for all of them.”

Who’s behind the signs?

No one has claimed responsibility for the signs—but speculation is swirling. Peters admitted, “It remains a mystery. The offer still stands—if the sign company wants to come forward, I’ll take them out for supper.”

A likely suspect? Peter's friend, and local business owner (as well as fisherman) Derek Friesen of HeatMaster. The witty wording and surprise timing seem right up his alley—but so far, he’s staying quiet.

“I’m kind of hoping there’s more to come,” Peters added. “The wording is genius.”

What’s next?

With the prank-turned-project gaining traction, Peters said people are already floating ideas: “Maybe a fundraising fishing tournament or some kind of scholarship. I’m just taking it as it goes.” Peters continues by sharing that there may be "Bubba" merchandise to purchase towards the cause, in good time.

Either way, this catch is far bigger than just a punchline on a sign.
