The Weyburn Police Service were called to a local gas station on Friday, after they reported an impaired driver. Police located the driver who was in control of their vehicle, however also displaying signs of drug impairment.

Deputy Chief Shane St. John explains the driver was displaying strange behavioral signs of impairment.

“When the police arrived, they of course observed impairment. Then they called for a drug recognition expert (DRE), one of our members.”

Due to the signs displayed by the driver, they were detained while the DRE arrived.

“You have some time to wait for that expert to come out and do the test. You can do a roadside or most of the time they'll be brought back to the station and done here.”

The driver did end up failing the test and was subsequently arrested and charged accordingly. St. John says they will see a court date, and their towed vehicle will be impounded for up to 60 days depending on if it’s a repeat offence.

He commends the business for making the report.

“It's really nice to see that public workers, they're really concerned when they see that, especially businesses, and they're not afraid to call that in. They do call that in because they're concerned about other people on the road. And that's so nice to see, because that might have saved somebody's life."
