A former Swift Current Minor Baseball player and his wife are giving back to the organization.
Steve and Brenda Cassidy recently purchased a $10,000 scoreboard for the 11U South Diamond with their company, Riverside Electric, completing the labour portion of the project a couple of weeks ago.
The couple, who are still involved in the daily operations of Riverside Electric, said that this has allowed them to give back to the community, with Swift Current Minor Baseball being the beneficiary in this instance.
"This is the only field that didn't have a clock," he said. "We've been to several other ball fields in the province (to watch their grandson), this is the nicest facility anywhere that we've found, but this one was lacking a scoreboard. I decided it was time it had one.
He brought the idea forward to Swift Current Minor Baseball President Chad Kozun and the City of Swift Current to ensure both would be on board. Once receiving the green light from both organizations, Steve, who played on the field in the 1970s, purchased the scoreboard from Kentucky.
"It's considerably different with the grass; we just played on prairie grass back then," he said. "We had a backstop and not much else at that point. Dugouts are a big improvement."
Kozun said that without the generosity of the Cassidy's he doubts a scoreboard would have been added to the diamond.
"I know Steve and Brenda have always been a pillar of the community," Kozun said. "For that donation, to have a scoreboard and finish off the fields is awesome.
"Amazed by the generosity and the donation, and we couldn't be more happy."
The scoreboard includes a pitch count feature and can be controlled from the stands.
