For Ty Masson, being named valedictorian of the MacGregor Collegiate Class of 2025 wasn't just an academic milestone, it was a symbol of his dedication, community, and character.
The Grade 12 student found out he'd been selected after a tie-breaking vote among five peers, a rare and memorable process that made the honour even more meaningful.
"It was really something special," Masson said. "I told myself I didn't care if I didn't get it, but I really did care, because it does feel good to represent your class. It's a big moment."
While Masson hadn't set out to earn the title, his involvement in school life made him a natural choice. From student council to high school volleyball and community engagement, his leadership and enthusiasm stood out.
"I didn't think about it much until the voting," he said. "But I've done a lot with the school. I think it just reflected who I am."
Masson highlighted volleyball as a particularly meaningful experience.
"High school volleyball was the biggest thing to me," he shared. "I learned so much and had so much fun. I was even selected as a grad All-Star and play with my buddies, it was amazing."

Juggling responsibilities wasn't easy. Ty balanced student life with work at the Co-op gas station in MacGregor, student council duties, and athletic commitments.
"It's kind of just non-stop. You just gotta go, go, go," he admitted.
As he prepares to address his classmates, Masson says his message will centre on choice and purpose.
"You always have a choice in life," he said. "I want to encourage everyone to choose the right path and the spot that's right for them."

When asked who inspired him most in high school, Masson pointed to his gym teacher and volleyball coach, Mark Gaudette.
"He's also my best friend's dad. He was always there for me and always said the right thing. I could go to him about anything."
Masson's future plans include farming over the summer at his family farm, followed by studies in Agribusiness at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon in the fall.
"The farm has had a huge impact on me," he said. "That's mostly from my family, but I want to take it further and see what education can bring to it."
As graduation approaches, he's looking forward to the experience as a whole, especially the celebratory supper. When reflecting on his journey, he has advice for both incoming grade 9's and \next year's grade 12's.
"To the grade 9's: don't be scared of high school. It's the best four years of your life," he said. "To next year's grade 12's: enjoy your last year while you can. It flies by."
Looking back, Masson would tell his kindergarten self to always keep moving and stay positive.
"Live your life to the fullest," he said. "Don’t sit at home. Work, have fun, and put a smile on your face every day."

Masson also thanked his family who helped him get through school. He said his grandma Masson had a big impact on his life.
"She helped me with everything throughout my life. She packed my lunches every day for work and school."

To his fellow graduates, Masson has one simple message:
"We finally did it. I'm proud of all of you and what you're going to do with your lives."
