The Menzies Medical Centre Community Board is inviting the Morden community to a free BBQ lunch this Friday, June 13th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Suncatch in Morden. While the food is free, donations are encouraged — all proceeds will go directly toward supporting the ongoing needs of the Menzies Medical Centre and enhancing local healthcare access.
“This is really about bringing our community together,” said Nicole Walske, Executive Director of Menzies Medical Centre. “We want to offer a free lunch where families, workplaces, and individuals can come out, connect, and learn a little more about how they can support healthcare in our region.”
A BBQ with purpose
While a hot dog lunch may sound simple, the impact of this event is anything but. All donations collected during the BBQ will go toward the Menzies Medical Centre Community Board’s fundraising efforts, which focus on maintaining and enhancing the physical presence of the clinic and supporting recruitment of new physicians.
“The whole concept of our Community Board is to support the clinic — whether it’s replacing chairs, purchasing new exam tables, or helping fund renovations,” explained Walske. “Even small pieces of equipment, like a Doppler or portable ultrasound, can make a huge difference for both patients and the physicians who care for them.”
The Board plays a key role in creating a well-equipped, welcoming environment for both current medical staff and future recruits.
“Having the necessary tools and infrastructure in place makes a huge difference,” Walske noted. “When we talk to medical students or potential new physicians, we can say, ‘You don’t have to bring your own equipment — we’ve got what you need here.’ That kind of support really shows how much our community values healthcare.”
Powered by generosity
The BBQ wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of local sponsors. Garden Valley Co-op, Winkler Meats, Exceptional Times, Old Dutch, and Giant Tiger have all teamed up to cover the cost of food and supplies.
“This is a 100% charity drive for us,” said Walske. “It costs the Community Board nothing because our sponsors have covered everything. That means every dollar donated goes directly to supporting the clinic.”
Guests can expect hot dogs, chips, drinks, and a sweet treat — dessert provided by Exceptional Times. Last year’s brownie offering was a crowd favorite, and while Walske isn’t sure what’s on the menu this time, she knows it’ll be a hit.
“Whatever Alex from Exceptional Times comes up with, it’ll be amazing,” she said. “We just asked for something that doesn’t melt in the sun this year!”
Everyone welcome
The Community Board hopes the event will be more than just a meal — a chance to connect with others, ask questions, and learn more about how healthcare is being supported locally.
“It’s about being together and understanding the importance of that community support,” said Walske. “It really does make a difference — whether someone gives $5 or $500, it all helps us move forward.”
