A vehicle fire that shut down westbound Highway 1 near Stoney Trail NW on June 5 involved a cement hauler, not a fuel tanker, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has confirmed.
In a written statement Monday, a spokesperson said fire crews were dispatched at 5:40 p.m. for reports of a vehicle fire westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway, west of Valleyview Road but before Old Banff Coach Road.
"This was a semi tractor trailer that was a cement hauler," CFD said. "There were no hazardous materials determined to be part of the cargo."
"The cab was fully involved when fire crews arrived," the statement continued. "There were also reports of multiple explosions from the callers to 911."
No injuries were reported. A fire investigator was called to the scene. Initial social media posts from Calgary police described the incident as a "fuel tanker fire."
The description prompted backlash from social media users disputing the claim, leading DiscoverAirdrie to seek verification from the Calgary Fire Department. Calgary police later clarified their role in the response.
"The CPS was involved to assist with traffic control and road closures in the area," a CPS spokesperson said Monday. "The location we noted was Westbound Highway 1 between Stoney Trail West and Old Banff Coach Road."
All westbound lanes were shut down during firefighting operations. CPS said traffic was diverted onto northbound and southbound Stoney Trail, with no access to westbound Highway 1 from either direction.
By 6:39 p.m., police confirmed one westbound lane had reopened. 511 Alberta confirmed at 6:44 p.m. that a single lane was open and warned drivers of major delays.
511 Alberta reported at 10:44 p.m. that the scene had been fully cleared.
Eastbound lanes remained open throughout the incident.
