When the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association decided to extend its high school competitive golf season into the spring, opportunities arose for youth golfers to get involved in the game during a key season. As a result, Humboldt Collegiate has been hosting a High School Spring Golf Tournament.

Since its inception, the tournament has been growing, says tournament coordinator Kerri Archibald, who works with colleague Yvonne Gueguen to host the event at the Humboldt Golf Club.

“Historically, we've only had fall golf and it's just a couple weeks of practices, and then pre-districts and districts and provincials; it was just very quick.” explains Archibald. “So, when the SHSAA, moved the start date to the spring so that we could have a spring season leading into that fall playoff season, we decided to start hosting a spring tournament.”

This year marks the fourth annual tournament. Approximately 90 golfers from Grades 7 to 12 from Horizon, Prairie Spirit and Saskatchewan Rivers School Divisions participated, along with St. Dominic and St. Augustine Schools in Humboldt. Other schools in the mix included Wakaw, Bruno and Lake Lenore from Horizon, and Aberdeen, Hague, Clavet, PA Carleton and Birch Hills, among others.

The HCI senior boys team finished first in the school team department based on the best three scores from the schools in that category (236 combined points). Bruno took second place, and Warman took third in that team event.

  • First - Tryce Wallin (HCI) - shooting 75

Archibald reported there were 16 golfers from HCI in this year’s tournament, around double the usual number of entries.

“It’s definitely helping to grow the game of golf here at HCI, which we are happy with.”
