It was a strong showing for Estevan hockey programs during this year’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Draft, with several local players hearing their names called and the Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins adding a number of promising young prospects to their organization.
The Bruins made five selections in the 2009-born draft. With the fifth overall pick, they selected forward Ramy Borowsky from the Tisdale Trojans. At 18th overall, they chose defenceman Orsen Poll from the Yorkton U18 AAA Maulers.
Goaltender Adam Muntain, who played with the Regina Pat Canadians, was taken 30th overall. He was followed by forward Cash Arcand-Vandale of the Saskatoon Contacts AAA, who was selected 51st. With their final pick, 63rd overall, the Bruins added defenceman Kane Bechard from the Regina Rangers U18 AA.
The Bruins also selected Taren Anderson, a product of the U18 AAA Estevan Bears program, 15th overall, keeping him close to home as he continues his development.
Several other Bears players were drafted by SJHL clubs.
Van Huebner was selected third overall by the Weyburn Red Wings, while Kobe Deck went 10th overall, also to Weyburn. Jack Robinson was drafted 27th overall by the Melfort Mustangs. Kayson Anderson was taken 42nd by the Humboldt Broncos, and Rhett Amberson was selected 44th overall by the Melville Millionaires.
The SJHL Draft marks an important step for young players pursuing junior hockey opportunities. Several players with ties to Estevan were selected, reflecting the activity and development within local programs.
