With summer around the corner and road traffic expected to increase, Alberta RCMP are reminding both commercial and passenger-vehicle drivers to take extra care when sharing the province’s highways.

Driving around semi-trucks, tractor-trailers, buses and other large commercial vehicles requires added caution. To help reduce the risk of collisions, Alberta RCMP have issued the following safety tips:

For commercial drivers:

  • Conduct regular trip inspections and carry the required certificates.

  • Stay alert behind the wheel and stop if tired.

  • Plan routes in advance and stay updated on road and weather conditions.

  • Maintain safe distances from other vehicles.

  • Be mindful of blind spots and wide turns.

  • Ensure cargo is properly secured.

For passenger-vehicle drivers:

  • Keep back far enough to see both side mirrors of large trucks—if you can’t see the driver, they can’t see you.

  • Increase following distance to maintain visibility.

  • Be ready for strong wind gusts or debris from passing trucks.

  • Leave extra room when passing or merging in front of large vehicles, which require more stopping distance.

  • Stay clear when trucks are turning, as they need a wide radius.

“Collisions between commercial and passenger vehicles carry increased risk due to the size and weight of the trucks,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.

“Taking extra precaution around trucks and trailers can significantly reduce the risk of collision.”
