As Estevan gears up for a busy weekend of festivities, Chief Jamie Blunden of the Estevan Police Service joined the SUN 102 Morning Show to share timely reminders about safety at the Energy City Ex, graduation celebrations, and summer bike activity. From child safety at the fair to helmet laws and safe rides home, the message was clear: enjoy the weekend, but stay safe.
“We get the fact that there's going to be celebrations going on. Make sure you have a safe ride home. Make sure you have someone you can call. If you’re in doubt, have a couple of different numbers... Anybody out there that needs a safe ride, should be able to get a ride home without somebody (inebriated) needing to get behind the wheel.”

Safety Tips from Chief Jamie Blunden
With summer events, grad season, and more kids out biking, Chief Blunden is encouraging families to keep safety top of mind.
At Community Events:
-
Teach your kids how to find you if they get separated.
-
Report any found needles to police or fire personnel right away.
-
Expect large crowds—stay alert and keep valuables out of sight.
-
If you're away from home, consider putting indoor lights on timers and having mail picked up to make your home appear occupied.
For Graduates & Party-Goers:
-
Make a plan for a safe ride home before the celebrations begin.
-
Save emergency contact numbers in your phone.
-
Never get behind the wheel impaired.
-
Let someone know your plans and check in when you get home.
Bike Safety Reminders:
-
Helmets are mandatory for anyone under 16 (must be CSA-approved).
-
Bright or reflective clothing makes young riders more visible.
-
Drivers: slow down in residential areas and be alert for kids on narrow streets.
Additional Safety Tips
For Homeowners:
-
Keep doors locked at all times, including garages. An open door is an invitation.
-
Report suspicious activity in your neighbourhood to police.
-
Set your alarm system and arrange for lawn care while away.
For Parents:
-
Make sure your child knows how and when to dial 911.
-
Share a list of trusted contacts your child can call in an emergency.
-
Set clear rules for Internet use, including not sharing personal info online.
-
Encourage the buddy system when kids go out without an adult.
For Drivers:
-
Never leave valuables visible in your car—lock them in the trunk if needed.
-
Lock folding rear seats to prevent trunk access.
-
Drive extra cautiously around playgrounds and parks—kids may dart into the street unexpectedly.
