Community members rallied around a Swift Current non-profit on Thursday, raising funds for several local programs.

The first Taste of Summer Charity BBQ, organized by Golden West Broadcasting, collected $2,110 for SaskAbilities - Swift Current Branch.

Kara Spur, a senior program supervisor with SaskAbilities, said she was excited to see the support the BBQ received.

"We're here today just to support the barbecue and bring some food back to our clients who are excited to enjoy it," said Spur.

Proceeds from the event will go toward four key programs run by SaskAbilities. These programs focus on youth initiatives: Summer Fun, the Social Leisure Youth Program, Camp Easter Seal, and Adaptive Technology Services. These programs serve individuals aged six to 22 who are living with disabilities.

"Social Leisure Youth Program (SLYP-Out) runs during the school year, one day after school. It's a time for youth to enjoy themselves and be with friends," Spur explained. "We do all sorts of different activities in the community. Summer Fun is a free summer camp that runs all summer. We take lots of day trips and visit local parks."

The impact of community support events like Thursday's BBQ  at Innovation Federal Credit Union is significant. According to Spur, the additional funds go a long way in keeping the programs free and accessible for families.

"It's huge to receive this kind of support. It allows us to continue delivering these services at no cost to the participating individuals."

Thanks to our sponsors Kal Tire for the burgers and buns, CMX for the BBQ, Innovation Federal Credit Union for the plates, Commissionaires for the ice, Triways Disposal for the garbage bins, and Grasslands Events for the chairs.
