The Town of Cabri has handed out the first-ever Community Leadership Scholarship.

The recipient is Brynn Napper, who plans to pursue an education in nursing. The total amount for the scholarship is $500.

Cabri Mayor, Norma Pederson, explains how students qualified for the selection process.

"The scholarship is for a student who does any type of volunteering, or they get involved in volunteering for a specific event, or they do something to make an impact on our community," said Pederson.

Students are able to apply for the scholarship via Cabri School. Once the Scholarship Committee has had a chance to review applicants, they pick one who best presents the qualities, characteristics, and achievements suited for the scholarship.

The main quality Pederson and the Town are interested in is volunteer work.

"For teens volunteering in small communities, it helps give them self-esteem, and it helps them meet people and get to know people," said Pederson. "You learn and understand how communities work when you work together. It's always beneficial on a university application or a job application. It shows your commitment to a community. Teens learn the importance of working together to get things done."
